How to Make Your First Trimester Comfortable

Pregnancy can be an exciting time, but there's no denying that it comes with periods of discomfort. One stage where you may notice the biggest changes is your first trimester. As your body adjusts to hormonal changes and physical challenges, you'll need to find ways to make this time a little more comfortable.

Find the Right Care

Establishing the right type of care for your pregnancy from the start is essential. Try to find an obstetrician who you feel comfortable with. The ideal person will work with you to secure the birth plan you want and will tend to your unique needs as a pregnant person. On your first meeting, your obstetrician should also discuss appointments and important factors such as imaging and screening tests. Once you're armed with information about the weeks that lie ahead, you should experience less anxiety.

Focus on Nutrition

The start of your pregnancy is a great time to listen to what your body needs. You may find that you feel hungrier than usual, so don't deny yourself those extra calories. However, while it's great to have the occasional treat, make sure you focus on nutritional value too. Prioritising a broad range of nutrients is a great way to minimise morning sickness. And if you do experience morning sickness that's severe and doesn't respond to different diets, speak with your obstetrician for advice. 

Adjust Your Clothes

Even though you won't expand too much during your first trimester, you may notice some physical changes that require adjustments. Your breasts are likely to start growing and may become tender, so start looking at maternity bras that are easy to adjust. Towards the end of the first trimester, you might notice that some of your clothes become a bit tight. If you're not ready to switch to maternity trousers or jeans, try using an expander belt instead. That way, you can stay in your usual clothes but still maintain some comfort.

Maintain Hydration

During the course of your pregnancy, your blood volume increases dramatically. If you want to support your organs in achieving this, you should prioritise hydration. Try keeping a reusable bottle of water with you and aim to drink it throughout the day. Maintaining hydration can also reduce morning sickness and bloating. If your morning sickness is difficult to manage, try peppermint tea or ginger tea. Otherwise, you can speak to your obstetrician to see if they can help you manage it.
